I actually don’t remember the day I was given this guitar by my grandfather, but there is a photo of the occasion. The inscription says “Handcrafted for Jim by Grandad Ted Beringer. 1986” However, I can’t imagine I was only 3 years old in that photo. At any rate, I’ve had this guitar for as long as I can remember. I had delusions of being a rock star, learning chords to Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Ween. I learned my first song on this guitar, “Every Rose Has it’s Thorn” by Poison. The older I get, the closer we come to being the same age. And I find it heartening that hundreds of years from now, when I am long dead, this guitar may still be out there, in the hands of a twelve year old boy. He is studying classical music, and learning the truly great guitar ballads from old dusty tomes written by someone named Poison.
